Why is the middle missing?
The term ‘missing middle’ refers to multi-unit housing that falls between traditional single and semi-detached homes and large multi-level apartments. This ‘middle’ of the housing spectrum includes rowhomes, townhomes, triplexes, fourplexes and walk-up apartments.
These housing options are ‘missing’ because of post-war zoning regulations and are largely absent from Canadian urban streetscapes, including Calgary’s.
Finding creative ways to introduce modern ‘missing middle’ housing for people of all ages, wages, and stages allows new households to form, young families to grow, and downsizers to stay in the communities they helped build.
